Sheared-flow induced confinement transition in a linear magnetized plasma

چکیده
A magnetized plasma cylinder (12 cm in diameter) is induced by an annular shape obstacle at the Large Plasma Device [W. Gekelman, H. Pfister, Z. Lucky, J. Bamber, D. Leneman, and J. Maggs, Rev. Sci. Instrum. 62, 2875 (1991)]. Sheared azimuthal flow is driven at the edge of the plasma cylinder through edge biasing. Strong fluctuations of density and potential (dn=n ed/=kTe 0:5) are observed at the plasma edge, accompanied by a large density gradient (Ln 1⁄4 jr ln nj 1 2 cm) and shearing rate (c 300 kHz). Edge turbulence and cross-field transport are modified by changing the bias voltage (Vbias) on the obstacle and the axial magnetic field (Bz) strength. In cases with low Vbias and large Bz, improved plasma confinement is observed, along with steeper edge density gradients. The radially sheared flow induced by E B drift dramatically changes the cross-phase between density and potential fluctuations, which causes the wave-induced particle flux to reverse its direction across the shear layer. In cases with higher bias voltage or smaller Bz, large radial transport and rapid depletion of the central plasma density are observed. Two-dimensional cross-correlation measurement shows that a mode with azimuthal mode number m 1⁄4 1 and large radial correlation length dominates the outward transport in these cases. Linear analysis based on a two-fluid Braginskii model suggests that the fluctuations are driven by both density gradient (drift wave like) and flow shear (Kelvin-Helmholtz like) at the plasma edge. Laser induced fluorescence measurements of axial velocity, velocity shear, and parallel ion temperature profiles during the route to plasma turbulence in a linear magnetized plasma device.
We report experimental measurements of the axial plasma flow and the parallel ion temperature in a magnetized linear plasma device. We used laser induced fluorescence to measure Doppler resolved ion velocity distribution functions in argon plasma to obtain spatially resolved axial velocities and parallel ion temperatures. We also show changes in the parallel velocity profiles during the transit...
متن کاملHigh- and low-confinement modes in simple magnetized toroidal plasmas.
Three-field simulations of interchange turbulence are presented for a simple magnetized toroidal plasma with a vertical magnetic field. The simulations show the presence of two turbulent regimes characterized by low (L) and high (H) confinement properties. We evaluate analytically the properties of the L regime, obtaining expressions for the plasma gradients and for the density and heat fluxes ...
متن کاملObservation of turbulent-driven shear flow in a cylindrical laboratory plasma device.
An azimuthally symmetric radially sheared plasma fluid flow is observed to spontaneously form in a cylindrical magnetized helicon plasma device with no external sources of momentum input. A turbulent momentum conservation analysis shows that this shear flow is sustained by the Reynolds stress generated by collisional drift turbulence in the device. The results provide direct experimental suppor...
متن کاملToroidal flow stablization of disruptive high b tokamaks
Disruptive high b tokamak plasmas can be stabilized by the addition of a sheared toroidal flow. Nonlinear simulations demonstrate that confinement in flow-free high b tokamaks is rapidly destroyed by growing fingers of hot plasma that jet out from the center of the discharge to the wall. The added toroidal flow eliminates the growing fingers, maintaining confinement. As b increases further, the...
متن کاملStudy of non-linear interaction of circular laser pulse propagating through hot magnetized plasma in the presence of a planar magnetostatic wiggler
In this paper, the self-focusing property of an intense circularly polarized laser pulse in hot magnetized plasma is investigated theoretically. First, an envelope equation governing the spot-size of the laser beam for both left- and right-hand polarizations has been derived in the presence of a planar wiggler. Furthermore, non-linear dispersion relation of laser pulse is obtained by using Maxw...
